Games in the STALKER Franchise

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007): The first game introduces players to the Zone, where they assume the role of a stalker navigating hostile environments filled with anomalies and various factions vying for control. The narrative is around uncovering the mysteries of the Zone.

STALKER: Clear Sky (2008): Being the prequel of Shadow of Chernobyl, it mainly follows up on what occurred before the first game. The game has high-end graphics and gameplay features that give heavy emphasis to faction interactions and player choice.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat (2009): The game picks off where Shadow of Chernobyl leaves off and develops more into a game.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl (Upcoming): Coming as a sequel, it is much more in hype for its contemporary graphics and gameplay, thus promising expansion on the developed lore and mechanics of predecessors.

What is the Story of STALKER 2?

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl takes up Skif’s storyline. It happens that he returned home but found his apartment destroyed because of an anomaly.

This event leads him to seek employment in the Zone, a hazardous area filled with mutants and anomalies, where he hopes to earn enough money to buy a new home.

Skif is smuggled into the Zone by a scientist named Professor Hermann, equipped with a unique device called the Scanner, which interacts with local anomalies and can recharge artifacts.

Upon entering the Zone, Skif learns that his first team is dead and soon becomes involved in the intricate politics of the place. Different factions vie for control, such as:

1. The Ward: A violent military faction that wants to impose order and eliminate anomalies.

2. Spark: An anarchistic group led by Scar, who believes that the Zone can be transformed into a utopian space.

3. Noon: Ex-Monolith cultist, now trying to fashion a new life.

On this journey, Skif has to make decisions that will shape the course of the novel and his relationships with those factions.

His quest for vengeance against those who had him, reclaiming his Scanner from them and finally choosing the future of the Zone.

The game has multiple endings depending on Skif’s allegiances. Depending on his choices, he can side with different factions or act independently, leading to various outcomes that reshape the future of the Zone:

1. Siding with The Ward: The expansion of the Zone is halted, but Skif remains apathetic to their motives.

2. Siding with Spark: Skif experiences a deceptive vision of utopia, revealing a darker reality.

3. Strelok’s side: He has the Monolith under control but puts up barriers so that he and others do not leave it.

4. Freedom choice: Skif can get into an emancipating pod where the Zone frees itself worldwide but creates anomalies everywhere.

This complex storyline combines survival and choice with consequence in the highly detailed post-apocalyptic world.

STALKER 2 Already Turned A Profit

Just one month from its November 20, 2024, debut, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has proven to be profitable as of December 18, 2024.

GSC Game World recently confirmed that this is the case after the game sold enough copies that allowed the company to recoup the development costs, as per owner Maxim Krippa, who estimated to be in the “tens of millions” in dollar terms.

The game reportedly sold 1 million copies within the first 48 hours, and estimates suggest that sales may have reached around 2 million by mid-December.

This sales growth is attributed to the game’s inclusion in Xbox Game Pass and its strong reception despite some technical issues at launch.

The conflict in Ukraine was a crucial factor affecting the game, making GSC Game World face very specific challenges related to its development.

For all this, the team has been able to ensure that players have something truly relevant, especially when this game relates to the overall cultural background of Ukraine.

GSC Game World has further future plans for STALKER 2, such as two DLCs and adaptation into a Netflix series.

How a Ukrainian Video Game STALKER 2 Beat Russian Disinformation

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the most significant cultural and commercial success for Ukraine in this context of geopolitical tensions with Russia.

Not only has it broken sales records, but it also serves as a main point in the battle against Russian disinformation.

A Russian disinformation campaign has targeted STALKER 2. This included a completely fabricated video which said the game was intended to allow the Ukrainian government to target citizens eligible for military mobilization by gathering personal information from players.

It also suggested that an embedded program within the game would collect the IP addresses and other information from the device.

GSC Game World publicly rejected these accusations by saying that they did not intend the game to become propaganda but rather a way to indirectly tell their stories and struggles.

The studio has also been an active supporter of Ukraine during the conflict, raising funds for military supplies and halting sales in Russia.

STALKER 2 is a symbol of the resilience of Ukraine during trying times. The development of the game was affected by the war, with missile attacks and cyber threats that caused team members to scatter across Europe.

Is STALKER 2 a Sequel or Prequel?

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a sequel to the original STALKER series. It takes place about 20 years after the Chornobyl disaster and the events that followed it and in the Zone, which had been established in earlier games such as STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and STALKER: Clear Sky.

The game’s storyline continues to delve into the survival and exploration themes with this dangerous, post-apocalyptic setting, featuring a new protagonist named Skif who interacts with familiar characters and factions from the previous titles.

Why is STALKER 2 so Hard?

The difficulty of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a defining feature that shapes the player experience.

The game is developed to immerse players into a harsh, post-apocalyptic world where survival cannot be guaranteed, and such a high level of difficulty is intentional.

Among the reasons for STALKER 2’s challenging nature is its realistic survival mechanics. Players must manage scarce resources, navigate hazardous environments filled with radiation and anomalies, and contend with hostile factions and mutants.

Even in the easiest mode, known as Rookie, players face a steep learning curve, as they are often unprepared for the dangers lurking in the Zone.

The game encourages players to adopt strategic thinking and careful planning, as recklessness can lead to quick deaths and resource depletion.

Another reason the game is so hard is that the enemy design is a factor. Players will face a variety of human enemies and terrifying mutants.

For example, mutants like the Poltergeist are nearly invisible and can deal damage without giving players a fair chance to retaliate.

This design creates tension and unpredictability, but it can also become frustrating when players feel swarmed by enemies that appear to absorb too much damage or attack from unknown angles.

Additionally, STALKER 2 has three different difficulty settings: Rookie, Stalker, and Veteran, which change core gameplay aspects such as enemy aggression and damage output.

Yet even at the easier difficulty settings, there’s still much interaction required with the merciless mechanics of the game.

The more challenging difficulties strip away things like HUD indicators, requiring players to have to depend on instinct and environmental signs to survive.

This is part of what makes it clear that survival in STALKER 2 doesn’t simply boil down to firepower, but rather, to adaptation and resource management.

Is STALKER 2 Connected to STALKER 1?

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is indeed a continuation of the original STALKER trilogy, which contains STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, STALKER: Clear Sky and STALKER: Call of Pripyat.

However, it is described as an independent sequel, meaning that while it continues the overarching narrative and lore of the series, players do not need to have played the previous games to understand or enjoy it fully.

The game introduces a new protagonist named Skif and features new factions and characters, while still referencing elements from the earlier titles.

Familiarity with the original trilogy can improve experience by providing context about the world and its factions but is not a prerequisite for playing STALKER GSC Game World has emphasized that newcomers can start their journey with this title without feeling lost.

But opinions on executing the game are highly distributed. Some players and reviewers mentioned that though the title contains excellent graphics and a vastly expansive open world, it suffers from bugs and missing essential features, like A-Life features from the previous titles, with performance issues.

However, there are hints that it might happen for PS5 later since there are rumors that a three-month exclusivity deal was entered with Microsoft.

Taking all this into account, based on the exclusivity agreement, the PS5 launch date could be around February 20, 2025.

There is no official confirmation from GSC Game World about the possibility of having it on PS5, but it is still speculated that this game will make its way on that console sometime next year or perhaps from February to May.

Stalker 2 Poppy Field

One of the early side quests in the Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, a request from an NPC Mityay in the settlement Zalissya is set about.

Mityay asked help finding a family heirloom, an Orthodox icon, which has hidden somewhere in the root cellar located inside Poppy Field.

This region is very picturesque, full of bright red poppies, but it also hides great danger, for there are evil anomalies lurking here.

The quest can be started by heading northwest from Zalissya. There is a quest marker on the map, so the player should go there. As he approaches the Poppy Field, he will receive a radio call from another character, Pomor, who gives him some tips about the location of the root cellar.

There are several options for what to do next: pay Pomor 2,000 coupons for exactly where it is, have a task for him to collect that information or to find the cellar on its own.

Once inside the Poppy Field, players must navigate carefully to avoid being overwhelmed by the deadly anomalies that can cause dizziness and unconsciousness.

One dies if they stay too long in the field without taking the proper precautions. Before entering, it is advisable to stock up on Energy Drinks since these can help dilute the effects of the anomalies.

The actual cellar is located at the western part of Poppy Field and is by an open hatch in the ground. Players will find the Orthodox icon leaning against a shelf in case they enter the cellar.

At the mission end, players are faced with the option of returning the icon to Mityay for reward or giving it to Pomor for probably unique weapon in return.

Stalker 2 Fast Travel

Fast travel in Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a mechanic that will enable the player to navigate this expansive game world much more efficiently. To use it, the player must find Guide NPCs. Guide NPCs can be found in major settlements around the game.

These Guides are represented on the map by a crosshair icon and can move players to other locations that also contain Guides but only after the player has visited those locations beforehand.

Players need to go to a Guide and click the option saying they are looking for a Guide to initiate fast travel.

This will give them a list of available destinations along with the cost in coupons for each trip. The amount charged varies based on the distance to be traveled, usually starting at around 1,500 coupons.

Note that fast travel is not accessible from any point in the game, but only from within a settlement when a player interacts directly with a Guide.

In addition, Guides can only transport players to other settlements that they have already discovered.

In this regard, players are motivated to exhaust each area before moving to new areas to reduce their reliance on fast travel.

Stalker 2 Poltergeist

In Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, poltergeists are among the more unique and challenging enemies that players will encounter. Invisible entities, these use telekinesis to throw objects at players.

They can be particularly ominous as they often guard valuable loot or key objectives, so they are quite formidable opponents for players to master.

Poltergeists have three different types: basic, electric, and fire. Each type has its unique challenges and needs to be defeated differently. Their presence should be recognized because they can cause quite a lot of damage if the player is not prepared.

Players will know they are close to a poltergeist when they see things floating, like boxes, barrels or crates, flying their way.

The most obvious way to determine the presence of a poltergeist is through the swirling, spectral glow showing its position.

The players may also hear strange noises, such as fizzing or animal noises, which help them track the creature’s whereabouts if it is elusive.

Strategies for Defeating Poltergeists

Basic Poltergeist

The basic variant relies solely on throwing objects at players. To defeat it:

  • Stay Mobile: Keep moving to avoid incoming projectiles.
  • Identify the Glow: Look for the spectral glow to locate the poltergeist.
  • Attack: Once spotted, unleash your weapon on it. It will create a rubble shield and attempt to flee, so persistence is key.

Electric Poltergeist

The electric variant can levitate objects and deal damage from a distance through psionic powers:

  • Close the Distance: Sneak up on it when possible.
  • Use Shotguns: Engage at close range with shotguns for maximum damage.
  • Dodge Attacks: Be wary of its telekinetic attacks and reposition frequently.

Fire Poltergeist

The fire variant is quite dangerous since it can deal burn damage:

  • Maintain Distance: Use long-range weapons like assault rifles or submachine guns.
  • Utilize Grenades: Grenades are a good alternative in close and confined quarters, but use care to prevent self-infliction.
  • Health Monitoring: Have fire healing items on hand for when one’s health will drop rapidly.

Recent Patches for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Recent Patches for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has had many patches since its release. Many of these patches fixed some bugs and improved the game’s performance.

After just a few days after it came out, Patch 1.0.1 became the first major update; just a day later came Patch 1.0.2, followed shortly by Patch 1.0.3.

Patch 1.0.1

It was released on November 29, 2024, Patch 1.0.1 focused on fixing numerous issues that players encountered during their gameplay experience. It included over 650 fixes, addressing critical bugs affecting both main and side missions, as well as improving overall stability.

Patch 1.0.2

It was launched on November 30, 2024, Patch 1.0.2 provided additional fixes, particularly for quest progression issues that had been blocking players from completing certain missions. Key fixes included:

  • Resolved a problem that prevented the second wave of Monolith soldiers from spawning during the “On the Edge” mission.
  • Fixed various missions’ NPC interactions problems so that they don’t make the game behave weirdly.
  • Several errors causing EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION crashes were resolved.

The patch was smaller in size than its predecessor, the Steam version being about 14.8GB  in size.

Patch 1.0.3

The latest update, Patch 1.0.3, was released on December 3, 2024. This patch addressed an annoying bug that would delete player saves in case of a forced reboot of the PC or Xbox, which had long been a source of discomfort for many players since its launch. Other changes include the following:

  • Disabling mouse smoothing and mouse acceleration by default for better aiming on PC.
  • Several fixes were implemented to resolve multiple crashes and glitches affecting gameplay.
  • Continued improvements to AI behavior and NPC interactions during missions.

Budmo Quest in Stalker 2

The Budmo! quest in Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a quirky and humorous side mission that introduces players to two drunken characters, Misha Boxer and Grisha Wrestler.

This mission can be found in the Slag Heap area, where players will need to refill their friend Panas’ hidden stashes with vodka. This would lead to a series of choices that might affect the outcome of the mission.

To start the Budmo quest, players will need to approach Misha and Grisha, who are sitting drinking at a table near the merchant. Once they converse with them, players can then choose whether to join them for a drink or go straight into business.

The drunks say that their friend Panas has lost contact and that he must be helped as he’s been exposed to radiation. They ask the player to deposit vodka into three stashes scattered across the Zone.

There are 3 Stashes Where Players Need to Deposit Vodka:

Power Transmission Pylon Stash is found up a power pylon, accessed through a nearby fallen tree. It has items like RNBW 2X Scope, M10 Gordon SMG and Pistol Suppressor.

Concrete Block Stash is found under some planks inside a broken concrete pillar. It includes valuable gear like an M10 Gordon SMG, RNBW 2X Scope and various suppressors.

Poisonous Hole Stash is located in a cave near an anomalous poison. The stash includes: Buket S-2 SMG, ammunition and an Optician Gas Mask, etc.

Choices and Consequences

During the quest of Budmo, a player will face the issue of his conscience; a player may either fulfill a task by depositing vodka as assigned or rob an anomalous stashes in his interests.

When a player fills in the stashes with vodka, the Panas character will appear on the third stash and would say he wants anti-radiation meds instead of alcohol and reward the player with 1,300 coupons.

When a player steals from two stashes, the Panas will see them on the third one and make a hostile response, so players have to defeat him.

Is Stalker 2 co-op?

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl does not have a co-op multiplayer mode. Developers at GSC Game World have confirmed that the game is designed primarily for a one-player experience.

Game director Evgeniy Grygorovych said that implementing a co-op mode might undermine the intended experience of being alone and overcoming challenges, because “there is definitely no friendship in the Zone.”

Is Stalker 2 Multiplayer?

Even though the game doesn’t offer co-op, a PvP multiplayer is going to exist in the game, available as a free update released after its launch date in November 20, 2024. These kinds of modes include deathmatch and team deathmatch classic.

How Long is Stalker 2?

Players following strictly through the main storyline may find the average completion time around 34 to 40 hours. Some of the sources suggest that players would complete it in nearly 29 to 35 hours, depending on whether the players stay strictly to the set objectives without getting involved with the side quests and exploring much.

If players want to do some side missions along with the main storyline, then average playtime goes up to around 54 to 55 hours.

For those who want to achieve 100% completion, which includes unlocking every corner of the game, completing all missions, and collecting all artifacts and items, playtime extends significantly.

Estimates are between 86 to 100 hours, but some sources indicate even longer times for players who are dedicated and follow the habits of exploration thoroughly.

Stalker 2 Review

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl represents that return to an iconic post-apocalyptic world, with a balance between survival horror, exploration and engaging storytelling. Since the launch, it has both enjoyed praise and faced criticisms from the players.

One of the exciting features in Stalker 2 is its survival mechanics, which are interwoven into the gameplay. It introduces players to several survival elements including hunger, thirst, and health management, through a detailed tutorial that eases players into the experience. It gradually makes players understand all the important mechanics without being overwhelmed.

Gameplay Experience

Stalker 2 features a massive open world, allowing players to explore a 64 km map filled with dangers, including mutated wildlife and hostile factions.

The combat is intense, with AI enemies demonstrating tactical behaviors such as taking cover and using grenades effectively.

However, some reviews addressed the inconsistencies in enemy AI behavior, where enemies could appear both erratic and unnaturally accurate in their attacks.

The game retains the core identity of the series by including features such as artifact hunting and environmental storytelling.

Players can revisit familiar locations from previous titles while interacting with characters that enrich the narrative without being mere fan service.

Technical Performance

Stalker 2 has been criticized on technical grounds that detract from the overall experience. Players have reported bugs ranging from minor glitches to game-breaking errors that detract from the gameplay.

While GSC Game World has acknowledged the issues, they detract from what could otherwise be a seamless experience in such a richly detailed world.

Stalker 2 Endings

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has four endings. The ending will be decided by the choices of the player throughout the game.

The ending of the game reflects the protagonist Skif’s alliances and decisions, especially during important missions which will have an influence on the outcome of the game’s story. Choices during these missions change Skif’s reputation as well as his relationships with the factions in the Zone.

1. Strelok Ending: She Will Never Be Free
This final is unlocked by teaming with Strelok, who is attached to the Zone and wishes to defend it from people that would seek to harm it. To unlock this ending, players must make the following selections during critical missions:

  • During the mission Subtle Matter, select “Life is for the living.”
  • During Dangerous Liaisons, choose “Escape” when Korshunov confronts the player.
  • Finally, in The Last Wish, choose to “Fire” when given the option. This ending culminates with Strelok entering a pod containing the essence of the Zone, signifying his commitment to its protection.

2. Kaymanov Ending: Project Y
The Kaymanov ending represents a more compassionate view of the Zone, emphasizing coexistence with its inhabitants including mutants. To achieve this ending:

  • Again, choose “Life is for the living” in Subtle Matter.
  • Select “Escape” in Dangerous Liaisons.
  • However, in The Last Wish, choose to “Lower the gun.” This is a choice to protect rather than to destroy, which is a vision of Dr. Kaymanov for a successful Zone.

3. Skif Ending
Skif walks alone to the end, entering the pod alone and expanding the boundaries of the Zone. To achieve this:

  • In Subtle Matter, choose “Life is for the living.”
  • In Dangerous Liaisons, choose “Escape”.
  • In The Last Wish, again choose to “Lower the gun.” This ending highlights Skif’s isolation and personal journey within the chaotic environment of the Zone.

4. Ward Ending: Project Ward
The Ward ending aligns with Colonel Korshunov’s militaristic approach to controlling the Zone. To achieve this outcome:

  • In Subtle Matter, also select “Life is for the living.”
  • However, in Dangerous Liaisons, choose “I’m not your enemy,” which solidifies your alignment with Korshunov.
  • This ending ends with Korshunov entering the pod, symbolizing a governmental takeover of the Zone and its resources.

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl captured the essence of its predecessors while bringing modern gameplay mechanics to immerse players further.

Survival challenges and exploration have been balanced well, allowing both new and returning fans to easily get into it.

Technical issues, though, persist and are still something GSC Game World has to work on to unlock this game’s full potential.

Within six months, by November 24, the game had shifted 1.4 million copies on Steam, from which the total gross earnings were estimated at about $66 million before accounting for expenses.

Just about a fortnight after it launched the game hit 121,300 concurrent Steam players.

After accounting for the fees of the platform, GSC Game World nets about $42 per copy sold, which means that, assuming an estimated budget of around $80 million, they had to sell roughly 1.9 million copies to break even.

STALKER 2 launched with over 2.5 million outstanding wishlists on Steam, a number that suggests a good deal of pre-launch interest.

The United States made up 22% of the total sales, followed by Ukraine at 16%, Germany at 7%, and China at another 7%.

The game was accessed by many players through Xbox Game Pass, which led to the high number of players but is not counted in the official sales figures.

GSC Game World has around 400 employees, which speaks to the huge development efforts that STALKER 2 entails and its scope.
